Does the government check mail?

for example: if i ordered something from an international source, would the postal service scan it? In addition, what would they do if the item was from a domestic source?Does the government check mail?
US customs can open, check, or confiscate any package coming into this country. Obviously, they can't open and inspect them all, but they are searched by drug and explosive sniffing dogs. Otherwise, I think they only check if they see something suspicious. However, I'm sure they probably look more closely at packages from Iran than from Canada.

The same goes for domestic mail. The postal inspector can open and look at anything he or she wants.
